No Femme Fatale here

The movie ‘Water’ certainly touched my sentiments. I cannot imagine living in the 1930’s let alone years before that. Thank God the sati system is extinct. Thank God my parents have brought me up in an environment where my brother and I have similar rights and freedom of speech .
But,
It disheartens me to see the presence of exploitation and dowry even today. What is worse that it takes place behind close doors amongst the educated masses……(sick!!)

I just had to understand what a feminist is all about and was pleasantly surprised to find vast resources on it. There is so much to refer on wikipedia itself that I found it difficult to explain the term in a line. To sum it all –

You are a feminist if you believe:
1. Women matter as much as men do.
2. Women have the right to determine their lives.
3. Women's experiences matter.
4. Women have the right to tell the truth about their experiences.
5. Women deserve more of whatever it is they are not getting enough of because they are women: respect, self-respect, education, safety, health, representation, money.
-- Naomi Wolf, Fire With Fire

So…YES..I am a feminist ! I do not have to head a morcha to be one !
Personally, cannot stand a man who believes that a woman’s feet are made to be lifted only from the bedroom to the kitchen.

All I ask is to be treated as an EQUAL

There is a good old saying
“Behind every great man there is a great woman”

I believe the vice versa holds true as well!!

Well said tams... quick to follow, hum tumhare saath hain ;) we may have been brought up in a different world, but a majority still believe that if one stands by her opinion-she is a feminist.. think that's one reason why most have stopped believing in themselves! keep it up:)

good one, you dont have to head a morcha to be a feminist. as much as we may rave about development, the kind of attitude that 'educated, well to do' people show as far as women are concerned expecially in the context of marriage is sickening. A very good friend of mine was meeting a guy (arranged marriage process) who lives in the UK (well educated, well to do) and he and his family still wanted her not to work after marraige (she is a CA ans earns well) because 'kya zaroorat hai?'. Its astonishing! I could go on and on about this but you get the hang...even today in over 90% of urban households in India, when a husband and wife both work, she is expected to come home, prepare tea for him, cook, etc. while our man simply watches TV or reads the newspaper. Believe me, its NOT as unbelievable as it may sound - in fact its quite common.

hehe..that was heavy! anyways good ideas .. iam happy u are thinking like this ,but the most important thing is to put words inot action ,as just by thinking and blogging things wont work .U expect people to be like u want them to be, but when it comes to urself and ur family things are different cause u dont wont to hurt people around u

Just one line to add

"Y should you disgrace and let down a women, who gives birth to kings' - Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Sikh Holy Scripture)

I guess the above line should sum up the theory that every 1 is equal and have the right to enjoy freedom

Well said, but just one small thing, "my brother and I have equal rights".

Were you drunk? Ask your brother and he might add an expletive (at a grave risk to his bones).

Apologies, but couldn't refrain from getting the truth out in the open.
